Bark Dog No

***

Teaching your dog not to bark by simply saying “no” can be an effective and very inexpensive method of training. In fact, if your dog tends to bark at nothing, this method is one you should try first. There are several advantages to teaching your dog not to bark simply by saying “no.” First, it is a very humane way of training. While many other types of training methods teach your dog not to bark by exposing your dog to unpleasant scents, sounds, or skin stimulus, a simple “no” is both more direct and less unpleasant. Many pet owners may blanch at using pinch collars or other forms of training collars, but few dog owners would shy away from using the simple “no” method to teach their dog not to bark. A simple no is also a much cheaper way to teach your dog not to bark than most of the training collars and classes out there. This method does not involve lots of knowledge or complicated equipment. It even works well with other forms of dog training. If you need to teach your dog not to bark needlessly, the simple “no” method is a good place to start. If it does not work, you can always try other, more involved training methods.

In order to effectively teach your dog to stop barking needlessly using the simple “no” command, there are a few things you need to keep in mind:

•Always say “no” in a firm and clear voice (without shouting or screaming) as soon as your dog begins to bark needlessly.
•Be consistent. In order for this method to work, you need to say “no” right away each time your dog begins to bark. If you only say “no” once in a while, when the barks annoy you, you will confuse your dog and make training far less effective.
•If your dog can see you, use a hand gesture as well as the word “no” when your dog begins to bark - the gesture will help reinforce the word.
•The idea behind the “no” method is to get your dog’s attention and to let your pet know that needless barking is unwanted. That means if your dog gets really barking at something - a cat, let’s say - and ignores your “no” you may have to reinforce the “no” by taking hold of your pet’s collar to get their attention or by using another method to redirect their attention.
•Make sure the “no” method is appropriate for your dog. Very excitable dogs with short attention spans may not react that well to this method. Dogs who are hard of hearing may also not respond as well to the “no” system. If your dog does not seem to bark any less after two weeks of training - or if your dog consistently ignores you when you say “no” - it may be time for another method of training.
