Barking Chocolate Dog
***
If you don’t like the sound of barking,
chocolate for a dog as a treat is not a good idea. Although dogs love the
taste of chocolate, it is actually a poisonous substance that can make
them very ill. Depending on the amount of chocolate that they eat, it
could kill them. If they only eat a small amount, the symptoms of illness
may not appear for 24 hours and it may take the dog 3 or 4 days to
recover.
If you feed a dog that is barking chocolate, the dog will stop barking
because of the toxicity of the chocolate to its system. Chocolate contains
theobromine, which is a natural stimulant in the cocoa bean. When a dog
eats chocolate, urination increases and the central nervous system and the
heart are affected. Some of the symptoms to let you know that your dog has
chocolate poisoning are usually vomiting, diarrhoea and hyperactivity. The
dog’s heart rate will also increase and you may notice muscles twitching
and excessive panting.
A small amount of chocolate such as small block of chocolate bar is not
enough to cause any problems. It is not confined to chocolate candy
because chocolate cake and cookies are just as dangerous. You might think
that you are being kind to a dog barking with chocolate, but a dog that
gets sick from eating the chocolate will learn to avoid it. Even though
your children may want to share their treats with the dog, you should
consider the age and the physical condition of the dog before you allow
them to share with the dog. White chocolate is not as harmful as dark
chocolate, but should only be eaten in small amounts and at very
infrequent intervals.
