Barking Deterrent Dog

***

There are many devices that make a perfect barking deterrent for a dog. You can have a kennel silencer that works in the backyard to keep the dog from bothering the neighbors. This device controls the barking within 25 feet, but should never be used indoors. There are also devices that are contained in a dog collar that pick up the sound of the bark and emit a high-pitched sound that bothers the dog and stops the barking.

Before you do buy a barking deterrent for the dog, you should first try to find out if there is a reason for the excessive barking. Some dogs bark because they are lonely and want company or someone to play with. Very often a stuffed toy does the trick or having toys within easy reach of the dog. You can also train the dog by teaching it when it is appropriate to bark. If there are certain circumstances that trigger the bark, you can try to reduce them as much as possible. For example, a dog that always barks when someone comes to the door is only alerting its owner to the possibility of an intruder. If you live in a high crime area, you might not want to discourage this too much. When you are not home, the dog’s barking may frighten off robbers and when you are home, you need to train the dog to respond to your command to be quiet.

If none of these techniques work, you can try obedience school that teaches the dog to respond to your commands. There is a barking dog deterrent on the market that involves masking a device in dog food that the dog swallows. When it starts to bark, you can dial a number on your cell phone to activate an alarm within the dog. This takes time to dial a number and has no effect if you are not around to do so. The neighbors may still complain about all the noise.
