You need to use deterrents to stop a dog
from barking. For some dogs this can be a very simple thing such as a
shout or a command to be quiet. The best way to stop a dog from barking is
to simply ignore it. By responding to a dog’s incessant barking either
with a treat or a command, the dog is actually training you to answer his
call. It does require a lot of patience to ignore the barking and you will
have to put up with the neighbors’ complaints.
Stopping a dog from barking also requires you to find the reason for the
excessive barking. The dog may be scared and every little sound frightens
it. The barking is actually an attempt to drive away what it perceives to
be a threat. You do have to make sure that the dog is not barking because
it is in pain or has a skin irritation of some sort. If the dog barks
because it is not used to the location or the people, it may take some
time for it to become adjusted and settle down. If not, you can take it to
obedience classes where it will learn to respond to commands.
Sometimes dogs bark when they are alone. If the dog is used to getting a
response of some kind from you when it barks, then it will bark
excessively when you are not around in an attempt to bring you back home.
On method of stopping a dog from barking in this situation is to make sure
that it has plenty of food and water within easy reach and toys that it
can play with to occupy the time.
